Save Six houses were evacuated after workers ruptured a gas pipe north of Auckland this afternoon.
A section of State Highway 16 at Helensville was closed while the firefighters waited for Vector workers.
Fire Service spokesman Jaron Phillips said Vector staff had managed to isolate the ruptured section of pipe.
Vector
spokeswoman Sandy Hodge said the leak was caused by third-party contractors.
It had resulted in five houses being without gas. The leak was expected to be fixed quickly.
