A man facing serious sexual charges was given name suppression yesterday, even though another judge said last week that suppression was unlikely to continue.
The 39-year-old man is accused of kidnap, rape and sexual violation using a pistol.
Last week at the Waitakere District Court, duty solicitor Brett Ravelich sought name suppression
because the man had not told his wife and three children about the charges.
Judge Josephine Bouchier granted interim name suppression and said the man had a week to tell his family. Name suppression was unlikely to continue after that.
But yesterday, Judge Avinash Deobhakta continued interim name suppression, even though he noted Judge Bouchier's comment.
Judge Deobhakta also made an interim order suppressing the facts of the case after the man's lawyer, Gary Gotlieb, complained that details had appeared in the media before being heard in court.
