Senior naval rating charged with being drunk on duty, theft

A senior naval rating on HMNZS Endeavour is facing a range of charges, including being drunk on duty and stealing navy property.

He will be tried at a court martial at the Devonport naval base in Auckland on June 13.

The navy said he had been charged with being absent when he was meant to be on watch, signing an inaccurate document which could affect the safety of the ship or the alternative charge of making a false official document, being drunk on watch or alternatively failing to comply with written orders, possessing alcohol, and stealing service property.

The navy said the matter was now sub judice and no other details of the case would be released.
