It is hoped four inexperienced trampers stuck in the Rimutaka Forest Park will walk out once river levels drop.
The group, aged in their 20s, went for an overnight trip into the park near Lower Hutt on Saturday, but failed to return home yesterday.
Acting Senior Sergeant Steve Braybrook saysthe search and rescue operation is on hold, because high river levels mean searchers cannot get into the park. He says the trampers have the right equipment and apart from being hungry, they should be fine.
Mr Braybrook says the only concern police have is the group's relative lack of experience.
