School to unveil Lovelock statue

A life-sized bronze statue of Jack Lovelock, one of New Zealand's greatest sportsmen, will be unveiled at his former school in Timaru today.

Lovelock, who won a gold medal in the 1500m at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, was head prefect and athletics champion at Timaru Boys High School in the 1920s.

The school houses a collection of Lovelock memorabilia, including his Olympic medal.

The statue by Margriet Windhausen was paid for by Timaru Boys High old boy Joe Wilson, who died this year.
