Former All Black Jerry Collins says he was scared and hiding from Brazilian gangsters the day he was arrested for carrying a knife in a Japanese department store.
Collins, who has been in police custody since his arrest 11 days ago, was so terrified of the gang he was relieved to be arrested and taken to the safety of Hamamatsu Police Station, he told TV3's John Campbell.
He said he'd received death threats and carried knives to protect himself.
"A misunderstanding with a gang had escalated suddenly and very dramatically to the point where he feared for his life and threats against his life were made," Campbell Live reported.
"He began to arm himself with knives as a form of protection against the people who were threatening him."
