It was hard to know who was more popular at Delhi's Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium last night - the Black Sticks or Bay of Plenty defender Andy Hayward's two mates from the deep south.
Hayward's team had a comfortable win over potential banana-skin opponents South Africa at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium to go two wins from two.
With New Zealand ranked seventh in the world and South Africa 12th, the match was expected to be close, but New Zealand quickly asserted dominance and went on to win 4-2.
It was the antics of Hayward's travelling fan club that caused the biggest stir in the again-deserted grandstand.
Dressed up in red Santa suits and lime-green face masks, the pair from Invercargill were Jim Carrey lookalikes from the decade-old movie How The Grinch Stole Christmas.
Hayward, 25, is known as the Grinch by his teammates, a moniker he doesn't seem to mind. What the uber-curious Indians thought is a different matter.
"Yeah, I brought a couple of mates over with me to help fill out the crowd. They've sort of gotten into the spirit of things by dressing up as a tribute to me."
New Zealand fired out of the blocks, with four goals scored in a frenetic opening quarter, three of them to Black Sticks' Hayden Shaw, Phil Burrows and Stephen Jenness. South Africa scored through Lloyd Norris-Jones.
North Harbour's Nick Wilson rounded out New Zealand's scoring with a brilliant reverse stick strike four minutes before halftime.
The Black Sticks backed off in the second half, an aspect that didn't thrill coach Shane McLeod.
"I sent the boys out with the message to keep things going and keep the momentum there, because we knew South Africa would come out more aggressive, with nothing to lose.
"It wasn't a great second half and we were very reactive to what they were doing. Really, we should have walked away with a seven or eight goals to one or two victory."
Hayward is playing in his first games after missing the cut for the Beijing Olympics two years ago. "I'm loving it, every aspect. Village life isn't waning and we're only training light on days off, so there's plenty of time to wander around the village and take in the sights."
Dhyan Chand Stadium was again near-empty, save for a couple of vocal pockets of Kiwi supporters, a smattering of locals and the Black Sticks women's team.
