A 22-year-old unemployed man appeared in Whakatane District Court yesterday charged with attempted murder and other offences after a shooting in the town on May 27.
Laurie Davis, of Ruatoki, near Whakatane, faces one charge of attempted murder while armed with a pistol, possession of a pistol with the intention of
committing grievous bodily harm and three separate charges of intention to cause grievous bodily harm to Raymond Moke, Stephen Anthony Moore and Nicholas Moke.
Davis did not plead to any of the charges and was remanded in custody by Judge Peter Rollo to reappear on June 12.
Gang tensions in the town had been high since 20-year-old Mongrel Mob associate Te Rangi Tait Carroll was killed in a brawl in the town two days earlier.
Mr Carroll was stabbed to death on Whakatane's main street on May 25 after the brawl erupted involving Black Power associates.
