Rotorua Lakeside concert forced to move indoors (+ video)

Wet weather has forced the Rotorua Lakeside concert to move indoors for the first time in its 21-year-history, but the rain isn't going to dampen the celebrations.

Rotorua Lakeside Concert Charitable Trust chairman Ian Edward said the decision to move Saturday's free concert from the Village Green to the Rotorua Energy Events Centre was made in the interest of public safety.

"Unfortunately [Tuesday's] weather forecast, a 12-hour window of no rain from 1pm [Saturday], had derailed dramatically, including thunderstorms.

"These are exceptional circumstances but we don't intend wet weather to rain on our parade."

Mr Edward said the First Sovereign Trust Fireworks Finale intended for 10.15pm had been cancelled.

"Otherwise it will be exactly the same show," he said.

"One can't control the weather, perhaps this is part of the charm of staging Lakeside. It's a celebration and we intend to deliver on our promise for a spectacular night's entertainment."

Production and event manager Chris Gillies said the team was working hard to come up with solutions to move the show indoors.

"Because of the nature of the show we need to redesign, which is providing a bit of a challenge."

Mr Edward said there were other decisions to be made.

"There are trucks on the road from all over the country who have to turn around, server providers have to be updated and the stage needs to be packed up and sent back to Auckland."

Mr Edward said the Events Centre had a capacity of 4000 and with entry on a first in, first served basis he advised people to get there early.

Once capacity was reached the doors would be shut.

People who had paid for reserve seating were not to worry however.

"The 1000 seats for reserved seating will be replicated with the same layout at the new venue."

No alcohol can be brought into the venue but a bar service will be offered.

Mr Edward said families were able to still bring food if they wished, and limited food would be available to buy.

Three hundred and fifty car parks, including disability parking, are available.

Despite the late change of plans, Mr Edward is confident not only will the show go on, but it will be another great concert.

"It's one of those things. It'll definitely be a memorable occasion and a concert we are extremely proud of."
