Road closed, trains stopped after truck smashes into west Auckland rail overbridge

The scene where a truck crashed into a rail overbridge this morning is now fully clear with the road open and trains running again.

Auckland Transport tweeted that Titirangi Rd reopened around 1pm after a 10-wheeler truck hit the overbridge flipping it on its side just after 10am.

Trains on the western line were disrupted for more than two hours but are now running again.

Auckland Transport said line clearance had been received with a speed restriction on the bridge. Passengers could still expect delays as trains between Henderson and Britomart returned to normal schedule.

Trains were halted between New Lynn and Henderson for more than two hours while work took place to repair tracks.

The accident, which only involved the truck, closed Titirangi Rd between Great North Rd and Margan Ave in New Lynn.

Emergency services doused a leaking fuel tank with absorbent.

Police say the truck driver managed to escape without injury.

Fire and Emergency northern shift manager said the crashed truck was left on its side blocking the road underneath the bridge.

While the 10-wheeler truck was not carrying dangerous goods firefighters were protecting the scene, applying absorbent to a fuel leak coming from the smashed vehicle.

Meanwhile a driver is being flown to hospital after two trucks crashed south of Thames this morning.

Police are warning motorists the Kopu-Hikuai Rd will be closed for 30 minutes while the rescue helicopter lands and takes the injured person to hospital.
