A number of small articles were also stolen in the burglary including trinkets, fake jewellery and lapel badges from his wife's collection. Other items of value were left untouched.
Tootell said the mounted medal collection held special memories for him recognising the service in conflicts around the globe. It also represented the close bonds of those he served alongside.
"It's not just a reminder of the friends I made but of those who have passed on who were with me when the medals were presented," he said.
"They have a sentimental value and something that I was wanting to pass on to my children and grandchildren."
Although he could order replacement medals, he hoped he could be reunited the original set.
This week he would be distributing leaflets around Riverhead and at second-hand traders in Kumeu and Henderson.
