Kiwi women as old as 53 are having babies, new figures show.

Figures from the country's 20 district health boards show the oldest woman to give birth between 2014 and 2016 was 53 while the youngest was 13.

In 2016, the oldest woman to give birth was a 53-year-old at Auckland Hospital, in 2015 it was a 50-year-old in Northland and in 2014 it was a 53-year-old in the Waikato.

Statistics New Zealand figures show 402 women aged 45 and over had babies during those three years in New Zealand and 90 of those were aged 47 or over. In the same period 66 women under-15 gave birth - nine of those under 14.

Between 2014 and 2016 there were a total of 177,708 live births throughout the country.

Fertility Associates chairwoman Dr Mary Birdsall said the age of women having their first babies was trending upwards and was now over 30.

She said couples were now getting married later, focusing on careers or buying a house before having children.

"There is more acceptance of fertility clinics and often the expectation that fertility clinics could overcome the effects of ageing," she said.

But, while fertility specialists could do amazing things, they could not stop or turn back the effects of ageing to allow women to have a child using their own eggs, she said.

"I would see someone every day where the are not going to be able to have children because of where they are, because of their biology, and they are often shocked that science can't offer a solution."

And even when woman are able to have children later in life, there remain challenges and risks associated with it.

Ady Priday, a self-employed midwife based in South Auckland with 22 years' experience, had worked with clients as young as 14 and as old as 50 in recent years.

IVF not a silver bullet

03 Nov 01:56 AM

This year alone, about half of her clients were between 40 and 50 years of age, she said.

In her case, all the older mums she cared for had become pregnant naturally and most already had large families. For them, every child was considered a gift no matter when it came, she said.

In other areas, older women sought medical intervention like IVF to help them get pregnant, she said.

Priday said there were issues associated with both very young and older mothers.

The risk for both mother and baby increased with age. Older women had a higher chance of developing high blood pressure or diabetes, were more likely to miscarry, have a post-partum haemorrhage or a long labour.

Guidelines also suggested women aged 40 and over should not go past their due date so they were often induced which could lead to a long labour and a higher chance of intervention, she said.

On top of that there was an increased risk of the baby having a high blood pressure, growth problems and congenital abnormalities like Down syndrome.

According to Auckland District Health Board clinical guidelines the risk of mothers aged 15-29 having a baby with Down syndrome was one in 1500 but that increased to one in 100 for women between 40 and 44 and one in 50 for women 45 and over.

Among very young mothers Priday said there were often problems with diet, drinking, smoking, drugs and sexually transmitted infections but the most significant problems were emotional.

They often struggled with low self-esteem, denial, concerns about being accepted by family and friends and isolation, she said.

Fertility Associates general manager Dr John Peek said there was no upper limit on fertility treatment as dictated by the human rights act but staff discouraged women 45 and older from having treatment using their own eggs because of the very low chance of having a baby.

The company's clinical policies also stated women over 45 must see an obstetrician or obstetric physician to assess their general health for a pregnancy and women over 50 must have approval from the organisation's medical directors before having treatment, even if they wished to use donor eggs.

First baby at 43 years old

Amanda Gordon didn't plan on having her first child at 43 but she didn't meet her husband Sean until she was 35.

They got married a couple of years later and started trying for a baby soon after with no luck. Eventually they turned to Fertility Associates.

The couple had their first appointment when Amanda was 40 and it turned out she had a low ovarian reserve while Sean had low sperm motility.

They had a first round of IVF and four eggs were successfully fertilised but none took.

That's when the couple were told their best option would be an egg donor.

Amanda said they were overwhelmed with support and a family member agreed to donate eggs for them.

After one miscarriage and two embryos which didn't take, Amanda fell pregnant at the age of 42 and gave birth to a healthy little boy who is now six months old.

Having a baby later in life had its ups and downs, she said.

The extra life experience better prepared her for the sometimes difficult IVF journey and the couple were financially more stable. But she did have some minor complications during pregnancy including high blood pressure, a bit of pre-eclampsia and an emergency caesarean section.

But, she said their "beautiful six-month-old son" Lachlan was worth the $40,000 they spent on IVF although she warned others not to go into IVF with rose-tinted glasses.

"Just go into it with open eyes that it's not a magic bullet. Be prepared for disappointments along the way."
