A spokesman for Ngai Tahu says it will take a long time for people to adjust to life without Bill Solomon, who passed away suddenly last night.
The Ngai Tahu settlement negotiator suffered a heart attack in Invercargill last night, and his body is now being taken to the TakahangaMarae in Kaikoura where the tangi is being held.
Ngai Tahu spokesman Edward Ellison says Bill Solomon will be remembered for his rebuilding of the marae at Kaikoura, and his guidance during the setting up of the Kaikoura Whale watch.
He says Mr Solomon was a highly respected kaumatua and leader, and a humble man who has had a significant and positive influence on the tribe.
Mr Ellison says details of the funeral are yet to be confirmed but he believes Bill Solomon will be buried on Tuesday.
