Rescued hunter still in a coma

The Taupo hunter who was found unconscious and hypothermic after spending five days lost in the Kaimanawa Forest remains in an induced coma in Rotorua Hospital.

Doctors said today that 58-year-old Des Pemberton, who is in remission from lung cancer and suffers from emphysema, was making steady progress but remained on a ventilator.

Hunting friend Lance Keightley, who was involved in the search for Mr Pemberton, visited him in Rotorua Hospital last night.

"He's not out of the woods yet, the doctors are taking it hour by hour," said Mr Keightley.

"He's looking a lot better and warmer than when we found him."

Mr Pemberton had a body temperature of about 25degC when he was found.
