The children are sporting funky headgear for their bandanna day celebrating a week of fundraising for charitable organisation CanTeen, which supports young people living with cancer.
The Douglas Park School Council, a board of eight year 6 pupils, initiated the fundraising
drive and have sold 300 bandannas, at $4 a pop, since Monday raising over $1000 for the charity.
"The school council screamed through two boxes of bandannas in about t2? days," Douglas Park School principal Dick Brown said.
"It's been really successful. The best thing is that the kids know why we're doing it; we've talked about why we're doing it and why it's important.
"A lot of them didn't realise other children could get cancer and had probably thought it was just an adult problem," Douglas Park School Council teacher liaison Amy Herbert said.
"It was the council's initiative. Part of the process was them emailing and contacting CanTeen so it was a purely student-led fundraising event one of the many things they've done throughout the year."
In August the council showed its collegial spirit, raising $240 with a coin trail for Puketapu School near Napier after floods in July. The media-savvy councillors came across the plight of Puketapu School while scanning newspapers.
The council is a student leadership body with two head councillors nominated by staff and the remaining six nominated by their classrooms.
Next on the council's agenda is a Halloween Disco on October 31, to raise funds for the 2008 council.
