The victim who died after a car that was fleeing police crashed through a Porirua fence was a 21-year-old Wellington woman.
The driver, a 42-year-old male, is to appear in Wellington District Court later today on a charge of failing to stop and a number of unrelated charges.
Police signalledfor the vehicle to pull over during a routine check-point on Saturday night, but the driver fled from the scene.
The pursuit lasted for about two minutes on the streets of central Porirua before the driver lost control around a bend and crashed through the fence.
He was initially admitted to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, and is expected to be released into police custody later this morning.
Police are unable to comment further as the investigation is ongoing.
The matter has been referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority and police are also conducting their own investigation, as is standard after an accident of this nature.
Police have expressed their condolences to the family.
