A police officer was deliberately run over in Auckland early today when he chased a man associated with boy racer activity, police said.
He received grazes and bruising, and police were treating the incident in Pakuranga as injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The officer was part
of a two-person patrol that stopped and spoke to two men in Harris Rd in connection with boy racers.
Senior Sergeant Karen Wilson, of the Police Northern Communications Centre, said one man ran off through factory buildings and the officer gave chase.
As the man ran across Ti Rakau Dr, two vehicles stopped to allow him to cross in front of them, she said.
One vehicle then allegedly accelerated, running into the chasing officer and causing him to fall over the bonnet and on to the road. The driver than sped off.
The vehicle was described as an early 1990s Japanese coupe painted black or dark grey.
