Police name man who was fatally beaten

Police have named a man who died after being severely beaten at a property in the Far North.

Sonny Werahiko Perene Taylor, 53, was found unconscious at a property north of Kaitaia shortly before midday on Sunday.

He was admitted to Kaitaia Hospital, then transferred to Whangarei Hospital where he died yesterday.

A 31-year-old had been charged with assault but more serious charges may be laid, police said.

Police would not comment on a possible motive for the attack, or whether a weapon was used.

A post mortem is being carried out in Auckland today.
