Police lift Riddiford St cordon following reports of ‘suspicious item’

The cordon at Wellington's Moon Pizza Music and Beer Bar has been lifted after police finished assessing a "suspicious item" this evening.

Police have lifted a lockdown imposed this evening on a Wellington street after reports of a “suspicious item” being found.

The chaotic scene unfolded about 6.20pm on Riddiford St near Constable St, Newtown, as the area was cordoned off.

Members of the public were advised to avoid the area as police responded to the scene.

Moon Pizza Music and Beer Bar was placed into lockdown shortly after the road was closed.

Staff member Leroy Patton-Goldsbury said “no one was freaking out” after they shut the doors.

“It was kind of a weird feeling, I guess, to be told to stay inside, but, you know, obviously police had it under control and were dealing with it.

“People were pretty level-headed about it and just staying in good spirits.”

As of 7.10PM the cordon had been lifted.

Police could not comment further.
