Christchurch police took advantage of yesterday's introduction of tough new laws aimed at controlling "boy racers" by impounding four cars overnight.
The legislation, which was passed by Parliament under urgency earlier this year, puts penalties for illegal street racing at the same level as those for reckless driving, and gives police the power to impound cars for 28 days.
It also introduces infringement notices for pouring substances such as diesel or liquid soap on roads to make vehicles skid or do burnouts.
Christchurch police impounded four cars last night, three directly under provisions in the new legislation, Senior Sergeant Rick Jury said in a statement.
"We have been out in the known trouble spots around the city.
"There were a lot of young people out in their cars whom I am sure are curious to see what will be happening under the new law."
Mr Jury said a further 18 vehicles were also ordered off the road an about 120 infringement notices were issued. Eight people were arrested for drink-driving.
Canterbury police planned several operations over the coming months to target boy racers.
