Wairarapa United coach Phil Keinzley wasn't waxing lyrical over his team's 1-0 win in their Central League football match with Napier City Rovers in Carterton on Saturday.
Just the opposite in fact.
While happy to have picked up the maximum three points, Keinzley had very little good to say about the quality of the Wairarapa United performance.
"Honestly I thought we were average, very average," he said. "Yes, there were some good individual efforts but as a team, we did too many things wrong, overall I thought we were poor."
Particularly frustrating for Keinzley was the number of long balls played as the hit-and-hope style did not reflect his pre-match tactics.
"We had talked a lot about the importance of keeping hold of the ball for long periods but obviously the message didn't get through, we were just kicking it up the field and hoping for the best.
"You can't expect to get any continuity into the game when you are doing that."
Also disappointing for Keinzley was that the majority of Napier City Rovers' most dangerous attacks came after Wairarapa United passes had been intercepted.
"When you look back on the game they didn't really create much on their own, rather it was a case of them taking advantage of ball we gave up."
Keinzley labelled the winning-goal scored by striker Seule Soromon as an "absolute beauty" but he was quick to add that several other easier scoring opportunities had been missed, especially in the first half.
"We should have been three or four goals up at halftime, we made it harder on ourselves by messing things up when goals were there for the taking."
And Keinzley is adamant Wairarapa United will have to be a lot more clinical both in attack and defence if they are to beat the in-form Western Suburbs at Whitby tomorrow in the normal Anzac Day series of central league games.
Wests hammered Maycenvale United 5-0 on Sunday to make it two wins from as many matches in 2012 and while Keinzley readily concedes he didn't see them amongst the front runners before this season began, he now rates them as a big danger.
"They will have taken a lot of confidence from the way they have started and they are always very difficult to beat on their home patch ... right now we'd have to be the underdogs I would say."
There was some hope that their three Miramar Rangers recruits, Phil Imray, Darren Cheriton and Tim Schaeffers, could be in the selection mix for Wairarapa United for tomorrow's fixture but they are all part of the Team Wellington side which has won through to the national league final.
This means that they will not only miss the crucial Anzac Day clash but also the fixture on Saturday against another of the currently unbeaten sides, Petone, in Carterton.
Therefore, the only probable change to the Wairarapa United starting line-up to that which took the field against Napier City Rovers is in midfield, where Miroslav Tvaroh returns from suspension.
