Person in hospital after house fire in Porirua

One person is receiving hospital treatment following a house fire in Porirua tonight.

A Fire Service central communications spokesman said firefighters were called to a two-storey home in Whitby just after 8pm.

"The house was well involved in fire on arrival. One person was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation," the spokesman said.

Numerous calls were made about the blaze, which had caused significant damage to the home, he said.

Four fire appliances were in attendance and a command centre had also been set up.

"It's been contained and crews were now dampening down hot spots," the spokesman said.

An ambulance spokeswoman confirmed one patient had been transported to Wellington Hospital in a moderate condition from the blaze.
