A person died after being hit by a train near Rolleston this morning.
A TranzApline train travelling from Christchurch to Greymouth - with 135 passengers on board - was involved in a collision about 8.35am near Rolleston, KiwiRail spokesman David Miller said.
A section of the Midland Line has beenclosed and police are investigating the incident, he said.
The passengers returned to Christchurch once police gave clearance for the train to leave the site this afternoon.
Refreshments and updates were provided to passengers on board, who have been offered refunds or the chance to re-book their trip.
