One person has been taken into police custody after an 11-hour standoff with New Plymouth police and the armed offenders squad.
Police were first notified about the incident in Spotswood at 10.15am, and confirmed tonight one person has been arrested.
"Police attended what was initially believed to be a familyharm matter after it was identified a man had breached bail by going to an address in the suburb of Spotswood," police said in a statement.
"As the man was known to carry firearms and there was concern for others, armed police were dispatched as a precaution."
Cordons were in place at the intersections of Paritutu Rd and Ngamotu Rd, Tumai St and Marama Cres and Paritutu Rd south of Simons St. The man was located on a property on Paritutu Rd.
Cordons surrounding the address have now been stood down and a scene guard remains on the scene.
It was initially believed to be a hostage situation but police said one person left the address earlier this afternoon and as of 5pm only one remained.
The man refused to leave and police began negotiations and just before 9pm police entered the address and arrested the offender.
