“Two other people are being treated for minor and moderate injuries,” said a police spokesperson.
Hato Hone St John said three patients, one serious and two moderate, were treated at the scene.
“An operations manager and a helicopter were dispatched to the scene and assessed two patients in a moderate condition who refused transport, while a third patient was airlifted to Nelson Hospital in a serious condition.”
The road is expected to be closed for some time and the Serious Crash Unit has been notified.
Diversions are in place and motorists are advised to expect delays.
