One person thrown from car, critically injured after three-vehicle crash on SH1 near Picton

One person has been critically injured after being thrown from a car which hit a wire barrier in a three-vehicle crash near Picton.

Emergency services were called to Tuamarina, between Bush and Para Rds on SH1, about 6.30am.

Police said one of the vehicles hit a wire barrier and an occupant was thrown from the vehicle, suffering critical injuries.

They will be airlifted to Nelson Hospital.

“Two other people are being treated for minor and moderate injuries,” said a police spokesperson.

Hato Hone St John said three patients, one serious and two moderate, were treated at the scene.

“An operations manager and a helicopter were dispatched to the scene and assessed two patients in a moderate condition who refused transport, while a third patient was airlifted to Nelson Hospital in a serious condition.”

The road is expected to be closed for some time and the Serious Crash Unit has been notified.

Diversions are in place and motorists are advised to expect delays.
