Newbolds Marist Old Boys have won the Wairarapa Cricket Association's Ben Iveson Cup open grade limited-overs competition for 2013.
Up against Rathkeale College at Rathkeale College last weekend, Marist Old Boys bowled first after Rathkeale won the toss. The students were in early trouble but recovered to reach a respectable 144, thanks in the main to a solid knock of 52 by Mark Ellicock. Bowling for Marist Old Boys, Adam Stephen finished with 3-16 off six overs and Marcus Howie 2-14 off six overs.
Openers Colin Jones and Greg Dennes-Wilson put on 83 runs for the first wicket for Marist Old Boys and while Rathkeale had a good spell when they took three wickets for the addition of only one run, it was not enough, with Marist Old Boys reaching their target with four wickets to spare. Jones made 46 and Dennes-Wilson 41. Mark Sprowson was the pick of the Rathkeale bowlers, taking three wickets.
