A dry weekend is likely for most of the country after cyclones Winston and Tatiana changed course - but they may leave some nasty weather behind for next week.

The remnants of the two tropical cyclones could bring rain and thunderstorm warnings by Wednesday and there will be rough sea conditions around the upper North Island.

WeatherWatch head analyst Philip Duncan said cyclone Winston would be tracking away from the country by Monday. The weather was going to be gentle for most of the country over the next couple of days. Only parts of the Hawkes Bay, Northland and Manawatu were likely to get rain.

"So there will be morning cloud, bit of morning fog, and then hopefully a beautiful afternoon," he said.

"The only thing we've really got going on is with a big pressure system over the country, we're getting a few big cloud build-ups."

Mr Duncan said there may be some light showers caught up in a humid easterly around Northland, and possibly rain for Manawatu on Sunday. There is a humid week ahead for Northland, and Auckland will also see easterlies blowing and high humidity.

Meanwhile, the energy left over by the two cyclones will tap into a new low by Wednesday or Thursday next week bringing weather warnings.

"So while we might not be getting hit by a cyclone, the cyclone's leftovers could contribute to some rain warnings and some thunderstorm warnings."
