North Auckland man critical after incident involving lawnmower

A man is in critical condition after an incident in North Auckland involving a lawnmower.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson told the Herald they were alerted to someone trapped underneath a flaming lawnmower about 2pm.

“The male patient was stuck under the lawnmower in a ditch down a bank.”

The incident was reportedly at a property in Waitoki, in the Rodney district.

“There were reports it was on fire initially but by the time we got there it was put out,” the spokesperson said.

Fire and Emergency crews from East Coast Bays, Silverdale, Kaukapakapa and Auckland City took about an hour to extract the man from beneath the lawnmower.

Hato Hone St John said they responded with one helicopter, one ambulance and one operations manager.

“One patient in a critical condition was airlifted to Auckland City Hospital,” said a St John spokesperson.

Inquiries into what happened are ongoing.
