Masterton police have found blood-stained clothing they believe is related to the death of Carterton toddler Hinewaoriki Karaitiana Matiaha.
The clothes were found in the Maori kindergarten the 23-month-old child sometimes attended.
Inspector Rod Drew says while the new findings are very helpful, police still need to talk to a
number of people.
The investigation into Hinewaoriki's death has also uncovered more allegations of child abuse.
The police have interviewed and examined a number of other children since looking into the case, but have not found any evidence to support the additional abuse allegations.
Mr Drew says one incident involving Hine came to light because people were refusing to talk to police. He says that forced police to delve deeper into the lives of people concerned with the case.
The children involved have been removed from their parents and are being cared for by senior members of the family.
The Department of Children, Youth and Family services is also involved.
