A multimillion-dollar lodge at Upper Moutere, acclaimed as among the world's finest, is up for sale.
The Lodge at Paratiho Farms, 18km southwest of Motueka, was built by an American couple, Robert and Sally Hunt, in 1999. It is now on the market as they seek a break from the business.
Mr Hunt said they planned to remain living in the Nelson region but wanted time to pursue their own leisure interests.
"It's a very demanding business, and very time-consuming. It's been successful but it's now time to kick back."
The lodge, which has been acclaimed throughout New Zealand and the world as top luxury accommodation, is built on a 366ha block of land.
The current rating valuation for the property is $6.9 million, but the lodge and business are expected to be worth much more than that.
In 2001, London magazine Tatler listed the lodge among the top 101 hotels in the world. The magazine's United States counterpart, Conde Naste Traveler, named Paratiho among its top 56 hotels.
Mr Hunt said he and his wife signed an agreement three weeks ago to market the lodge worldwide as well as within New Zealand, although he doubted there would be much of a market for it here.
He said it could be sold as a lodge, or as a private residence.
