Auckland Hospital cordoned off after bomb scare

Road blocks surround Auckland Hospital this morning while police investigate a suspicious suitcase left in the orthopaedic department on the first floor.

Sergeant Mike Wilson said a hospital staff member called police about 9am concerned a suitcase had been left unattended "for quite some time".

Sergeant Wilson said the emergency department had been evacuated.

About 130 people are milling around outside the main hospital building and no one is being allowed in.

The Defence Force bomb squad was at the scene and assessing the situation.
