A Dargaville man who bit off a kitten's head has been sent to prison.
Wiremu Pokai Haare, aged 35, a labourer, was jailed for one month by Judge Lindsay Moore in the Dargaville District Court yesterday after earlier admitting a charge of cruelty.
Police told the court Haare was in the communal lounge at the Selwyn Park Motor Camp in Dargaville on October 28 with a woman who owned a 10-week-old kitten named Tuppence.
Haare became upset and screamed at the woman: "Do you want me to eat Tuppence now?"
He grabbed the kitten by the hind legs and put its head in his mouth.
The animal's owner tried unsuccessfully to stop him.
Later, Haare told police he was angry because the kitten was taken into the kitchen.
