A pedestrian is suffering serious injuries after being struck by a car in Hamilton.

Emergency services were called to the crash scene along Willoughby St, Whitiora, around 6.40pm, police say.

"A car has hit a pedestrian, who has been seriously injured," a spokeswoman said.

"Diversions are being put in place and motorists are asked to avoid the area."

The Serious Crash Unit has been advised of the incident.
