Man struck by car in Petone, Lower Hutt, dies

A man struck by a car in Lower Hutt this morning has died.

Emergency services were called to the Petone Railway Station, near the intersection of Jackson St and Hutt Rd, about 6.15am.

Police initially said the pedestrian had suffered serious injuries. However, just before 12pm, police said the man had died.

Shortly after the incident, motorists were told to avoid the area completely as the road is to be closed for some time as emergency services work at the scene.

Road authorities said to expect "severe delays" this morning.

The Serious Crash Unit has also been advised and an investigation into the circumstances of the incident is now under way.

The death comes after police also confirmed this morning that an 87-year-old man hit by a vehicle in Papatoetoe, South Auckland, yesterday had also succumbed to his injuries.
