A third victim in a crash near Te Pohue that claimed the lives of two people remains in a critical condition on Sunday.
Two people died following the horrific crash between two vehicles on State Highway 5 on Saturday afternoon.
A woman in her 50s sustained critical injuries and wasairlifted to Hawke's Bay Hospital, where she remains critical.
The cause of the crash was still being investigated.
The road, which was closed shortly after police were alerted to the crash around 3.15pm, was re-opened about 10pm.
The New Zealand Transport Agency reported the crash took place north of Te Pohue Loop Rd on SH5.
The serious crash unit was also on the scene conducting an investigation, NZTA said.
