A cement truck driver has been transported to hospital in a serious condition following a crash in South Auckland.

Emergency services rushed to Whitford Rd in Flat Bush about 1pm following reports a truck had rolled down a bank.

The Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter landed on the nearby bridge and waited while fire and emergency services used ropes to lift the patient up to the road.

Crew describe the patient as being "very lucky" considering the fall was from a height of about 10 metres.

The patient was transported to Middlemore Hospital by ambulance in a serious yet stable condition.

The Serious Crash Unit is in attendance and part of the road has been closed.

Diversions are in place at Point View Drive and Broomfields Rd.

A St John spokeswoman confirmed they sent two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle and one helicopter to the incident but that the helicopter was not needed to transport the patient.
