Fleeing driver hits pedestrian during police pursuit in Auckland CBD

A pedestrian was injured when they were hit by a car in the Auckland CBD this morning.

A fleeing driver had escaped from police in Upper Queen St this morning after police abandoned pursuit.

Police had attempted to stop a vehicle of interest in Auckland CBD about 11am after identifying the driver as being a person wanted.

The driver failed to stop and fled.

Police followed the vehicle for about 1 minute but called off the pursuit due to the dangerous manner of driving.

The vehicle was then seen again and police tried to stop it.

The fleeing vehicle collided with the rear end of a bus causing the vehicle to hit a nearby pedestrian at the intersection of Anzac Ave and Waterloo Quadrant, police said.

Following the crash the fleeing driver ran from the scene on foot. He was apprehended a short distance from the crash.

A police spokesman said a white substance was found in the vehicle and the substance is currently undergoing testing to identify what it is.

The pedestrian received minor injuries, and had medical treatment at the scene.

Police arrested the fleeing driver who is now in custody and will be facing driving charges.
