Police are asking people to report any suspicious incidents after a string of indecent assaults on Hawke's Bay women.

A team of detectives were investigating, Detective Sergeant Jason Crowe said.

The assaults occurred in Napier Hill, Taradale and Havelock North. Police were unsure if they were connected.

All of the assaults, however, were committed by lone man who escaped on foot. Police planned to release a more detailed description later.

None of the victims required medical attention, and received assistance from Victim Support.

Anyone witnessing suspicious behaviour in Napier Hill, Taradale or Havelock should report it to police, Mr Crowe said.

If people were threatened, he advised them to make noise, call for help and ring police on 111.

Anyone who felt safe enough should take a video on their smartphone, he said.

Police asked anyone with information to contact Hawke's Bay CIB on 06 211 3872 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Mr Crowe advised anyone walking alone at night to be aware of their surroundings and other people and:

- keep to well-lit areas
- Keep bags, purses etc close to your body
- walk close to the gutter
- walk facing traffic
