A person has escaped serious injury after being struck by a car in Ngongotaha.

Emergency services were called to Ngongotaha Rd between Hood St and Wikaraka St at 7.06pm on Saturday.

A police spokesman said the pedestrian appeared to have walked out into the traffic.

"The person appeared to have only suffered minor scrapes and bruises."

Fire Service Northern Communications Centre shift manager Jarron Phillips said traffic was diverted on to Wikaraka St for some time.

The person was taken to Rotorua Hospital.

A Lakes District Health Board spokeswoman was unable to give an update on the pedestrian's condition today.
