Rollie Heke - the man wanted for shooting at police last weekend - remains on the run.

Armed police swooped on a home in the Auckland suburb of Owairaka last night as they continued their search for the 36-year-old.

He has been wanted for a week after firing at police in Morrinsville.

Police said they had "reason to believe" that Heke may have been at the Cassino Tce address.

But neither he nor his former partner Irene Scanlon, who is also being sought by police, were found.

"Due to concerns for firearms, some nearby residents were evacuated and cordons were put in place," a statement said.

"Police would like to thank members of the public for their patience this evening and for the information which they continue to provide us.

"Police remain hopeful that this situation will resolve peacefully and strongly encourage Heke and Irene Scanlon to present themselves to police."

A witness told the Herald that for about two hours armed police had surrounded a property.

The witness said police "were constantly instructing the people inside to come out with hands empty and raised. They said they had an arrest warrant for someone with surname Heke".

Heke has been on the run from police for months, after cutting off his electronic monitoring bracelet.

On Friday, Heke's father made a plea in a statement to the Herald for his son to give himself up.He also urged his son not to "go out in a blaze of glory".

"No one has been hurt, it's not that bad yet. You have time to do the right thing," Heke's father said.

"If you want someone from the whanau to come and get you just phone one of us. You have a big whanau out here that cares for you. You are well loved by all of us.

"Let's have a good outcome. We don't want anyone to be hurt, including you."
