A young Waikato man is believed to have been killed in a fiery crash south of Thames.

Police have confirmed that a person died in the crash on State Highway 26 at Puriri just after 8pm yesterday, but are yet to release further details.

However, sources have told the Herald the car has veered off the road and crashed into a concrete retaining wall before bursting into flames.

The young man, believed to be in his late teens, is understood to have died on impact.


The police serious crash unit is investigating.

The Herald has approached police for comment.
