"Two females took food items from Countdown Mangere and left the store without paying."
The spokeswoman said the security guard followed the females who got into a vehicle parked nearby and tried to reach through the open rear window to get the items inside.
However, the women in the vehicle began to drive away at "low speed" and dragged the guard some 60 metres.
"The security guard sustained minor injuries to his knee and was able to recover some of the stolen items."
Police arrived at the supermarket not long after it happened, but the spokeswoman today said enquiries to identify and locate the females and their vehicle was still underway.
In an effort to help find them the security guard posted on social media images of the women and a video of the incident on his Facebook page.
"This is footage from what happened to me last week Friday 13th of January 2017. The vehicle is Honda CRV Maroon but no chance to get the rego."
So far the video has done the rounds on social media, and been viewed more than 15,000 times.
