Footage has emerged of a Tauranga man playing his drums on the side of State Highway 29, at the summit of the Kaimai Range, sparking a hunt to track the mystery man down.

Video footage has emerged of a man playing a set of drums on the side of the road at the summit of the Kaimai Range.

The Tauranga man sparked interest from people travelling on State Highway 29 yesterday when they saw him practising on the set of drums at the summit.

Andrew Mock stopped with his family to get a closer look and found the man beating away with headphones on. Mr Mock filmed some of the man's efforts after finding out he was from Tauranga.

Mr Mock said the man told him his neighbours just had a baby and he didn't want to disturb them with his drumming, so he chose the Kaimai Range instead.

"It was the highlight of the day for my kids,'' Mr Mock said.

Mr Mock carried on with his journey before getting any more details, including the man's name.
