A young woman was pulled from the Whanganui River yesterday after jumping from the Cobham Bridge.

Police said the woman had climbed onto the structure early in the afternoon while in a distressed state.

Attempts to calm her failed and she jumped into the river. A Whanganui police officer dived in after her and pulled her ashore.

Police said the woman had been undergoing psychiatric treatment. She was taken to Whanganui Hospital by ambulance.

Police said she did not appear to have been physically injured. No further details were available at press time.
