Texas Cuff was sentenced to 18 hours community service at Wanganui District Court.

A man used an 11-year-old to shield himself from security cameras while he stole goods.

Texas Cuff pleaded guilty in the Whanganui District Court on Tuesday for a charge of shoplifting.

Police prosecutor Steven Butler told the court Cuff entered Pak'n Save Whangnui at 12.22pm on November 22.

Cuff then used the child to shield himself from the security cameras while he stole items valued at $18.76.

Judge Philip Crayton noted that it was concerning he used the child to carry out the theft and that he was starting to develop a history of offending.
