Nancy Sjoberg thought a phone call telling her she had won a brand new car was a hoax.

It wasn't.

The 92-year-old Onerahi resident had won a Holden Spark car from a three-week nationwide New World supermarket promotion.

"I didn't believe it to begin with," Nancy said. "I didn't realise there was a promotion going on. I was just doing my usual shopping," she said.

"Then, when I realised [it was true], I was so excited and went into denial."

Customers received one entry into the draw for every $50 they spent in store and swiped their Fly Buys or Airpoints card during the three-week promotion.

Nancy, who has been shopping at New World Onerahi since it opened (more than 40 years ago), had actually given up driving as a result of a health scare a few years ago. She planned to sell the car and use the money to help others.

"It's good to be able to help other people," she said.

One-hundred-and-thirty eight New World stores took part with each giving away a car worth almost $18,000.
