Two people are in hospital with serious injuries after their ute lost control and rolled in rural Canterbury at the weekend.

The crash came in a weekend in which 10 people were killed in road accidents.

Emergency services were called to the single vehicle crash near the intersection of State Highway 73 West Coast Rd and Ansons Rd shortly before 9am on Saturday.

Police believe a red/gold coloured 1991 Nissan ute was heading east-bound towards Kirwee around a moderate bend when the driver lost control.

The ute rolled before coming to a stop in the westbound lane.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The driver and passenger were taken to Christchurch Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

The male driver suffered serious cuts and required surgery on his arm while the female passenger was being treated for serious injuries.

They are understood to be in a stable condition in Christchurch Hospital.

Police investigations are ongoing.
