Police are scouring CCTV footage to try to track down a woman who left a baby alone in a supermarket carpark while she went shopping in Porirua on Saturday morning.
They have indicated that no charges will be laid, but a police spokesman said they wanted to contact the woman and put her in touch with Child Youth and Family.
The baby was left in a car outside the Porirua Pak'n Save with a note on its blanket which said the baby's mother was shopping, and to call a mobile number if there were any issues.
The note read: "My mum's in doing the shopping, call her if I need anything".
The case has attracted international media attention.
