Cans of Cody's bourbon litter the front yard of a Tauranga home where a man was stabbed last night.

Inspector Ben Offner said a male was taken to the emergency department at Tauranga Hospital with stab wounds to his chest, at 2.49am today.

The man's condition was considered very serious by medical staff, and the patient was undergoing surgery in the early hours of today, he said.

The residential address in Baycroft Avenue, Parkvale where the incident occurred has been cordoned off by police.

CIB staff were investigating the scene, and have placed markings around cans of Cody's Bourbon and a backpack left on the front lawn.

A neighbour of the property, who doesn't want to be named, said a woman living at the address was picked up by her mother this morning.

The female occupant was described as a "nice woman'' by the neighbour.

She said there was often parties at the address.

Mr Offner said police were following positive lines of enquiry, and asked anyone with information to phone Tauranga Police on (07) 577 4300 or anonymously phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
