Nearly 60 pilot whales are dead after a pod of 73 stranded on Karikari Beach near Kaitaia yesterday.
Carolyn Smith, community relations programme manager for the Department of Conservation in Kaitaia, said the whales had probably stranded during Thursday night.
The focus was on trying to refloat the survivors. Far North Whale Rescue was working with DoC at the scene.
